Renewables now account for around 17% of global energy consumption and fortunately the trend is set to rise as the need to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases grows.

The European Union has a target of 20% share of renewables in its energy generation. Germany has set a target of 30% for 2030 and 60% by 2050. In the transport sector, however, the Commission hopes that the share of biofuels in total fuel consumption will account for 10% by 2020.
